Solo project with the aim of exploring areas of experimental 
electronic/electro-acoustic sound and composition.

Biography:

Epoch Collapse was making Dark Ambient music before they even knew of its existence or before the term was coined. The music was simply 'experimental', or 'industrial', and even if the aesthetic quality back then was sometimes akin to what is now known as Dark Ambient, they were unaware of it until the 1990's - it was seen only as an extension of Ambient Music. After many years, Epoch Collapse was founded (in 2000) by Darius Roberte (aka DR) - a composer, photographer, and multimedia creator/technician. 

Epoch Collapse is an experimental, electronic, cinematic music and audio-visual/multimedia project - it is primarily a solo project, expanding sometimes into collaborative sessions/events/projects. Epoch Collapse is a wholly independent project and is not affiliated with any other persons, companies or educational institutions - nor is it affiliated within any one particular movement or trend in music or media, though the music could be categorised or described as 'Symphonic Soundscape', 'Dark Ambient', 'Experimental Electronic', 'Industrial Ambient', 'Berlin School Influenced', 'Power Electronics', 'Avant-Garde inspired', etcetera. The compositions involve a fair degree of multi-layering and textural complexity which has almost become a musical trademark. 

Compositional inspiration is drawn from film (many works are cinematic in form and style), literature (classics, history, science/cosmology, speculative fiction, occult, horror, mythology), and other areas of exploration. On occasion, Epoch Collapse performs live to silent films and other media using tape collages/digital soundscapes/electronic sounds. The live mixing of original sounds and samples - a unique sound collage - are most often performed via a graphic score designed by the composer. 

There are over 300 compositions that will - in the near future - be released and be for sale via an independent label. Compositions are included in a catalogue system, the first being: DMR-001 - and so on.  At the time of writing (May 2021) there are 60 albums available for purchase on Bandcamp - with many more releases to come. 

Over the last several years there have also been numerous international collaborations involving field recordings, electro-voice works, electro-acoustic works, and computer-generated soundscapes - with other musicians, media/filmmakers, and writers.

Dark Ambient, a history:

In the 1980s Dark Ambient used to be referred to as "ambient industrial" when it first made a mark in the global music community - early on - mostly in the UK, and US, and Germany. It is a subgenre/branch of another subgenre: Post-Industrial Music. As a result, it is more intense than the earlier incarnation of Ambient Music (Eno, Budd, etc.); and the atmosphere is made up to a large extent of discordant drones or atonal overtones than the lighter, seemingly more transparent atmosphere, of Ambient Music - drones are present in both, but there the similarities unravel, as Dark Ambient often imbues or conjures up an atmosphere which is foreboding, ominous etc. But that is to limit it to only a part of the musical spectrum, as it can take on a manifold of varying emotional states. If we bring Ligeti into the equation - well, Dark Ambient can sometimes venture into areas that are somewhat reminiscent of Ligeti (with his micropolyphony and microtonality), and other avant-garde composition - but generally with an abundance of droning. Cataclysmic sounds and violent noise are not alien to Dark Ambient either. And then there's Spectralism - where there are definite parallels; but again, Dark Ambient, according to its appellation, will be more "ambient", more atmospheric than any avant-garde music that bears any equivalence - either remotely or intrinsically.

To put it succinctly, in terms of Ambient (and the use of drones): "...long sustained notes, held in a wash of sound, not aggressively asserted but more organic sounding, as if the drone develops from its overtones." 

With Dark Ambient it can be aggressively asserted. Ambient (the early regular variety) is less aggressive - quite the opposite, in fact.

DA: The drone develops from layering of tones which can be extremely discordant and atonal, as in more industrial forms, or it can be far less - even gravitating more towards the earlier standard Ambient. The difference between Dark and regular Ambient is that the latter almost never strays from that wash of sound (why there was a significant nexus between Minimalism and Ambient in the early years (1970s-80s) - whereas Dark Ambient can and will often involve more violent sonic elements, though not always.

Speaking of microtonality (and other non-regular tonalities): Here we find a symbiosis and synergy with elements of Asiatic music - particularly ancient Middle Eastern and classical Indian; from which the "otherworldliness" and "cosmic" aspects of Ambient (dark or light) may make their resounding appearance.
